‘수간티니 마티야무탄 탕가라사’선정

- 스리랑카 여성들의 존엄성을 향한 멈추지 않는 투쟁의 상징 !

2024 광주인권상심사위원회는 5월 2일(목) 11:00 오월기억저장소(5·18기념재단)에서 2024 광주인권상 수상자로 스리랑카 여성인권활동가 ‘수간티니 마티야무탄 탕가라사(이하 수간티니)’로 선정했다고 발표했다.

수상자 수간티니는 타밀어로 ‘존엄성을 향한 멈추지 않는 투쟁’을 의미하는 ‘아마라’단체의 대표로 활동하며, 스리랑카 정부군 보안부대의 수많은 탄압과 고통을 이겨내고 전쟁피해여성들의 인권신장과 권익향상을 위해 투쟁해 왔으며 군인들에 의해 삶의 모든 것을 잃은 많은 다른 여성들에게 그녀는 용기와 희망의 상징이 되고 있다.

2024 광주인권상 심사위원회(위원장 송선태)는“수간티니의 활동이 5·18정신과 맞닿아 있음을 확신하며, 스리랑카 타밀 일람 여성들의 인권향상을 위한 그녀의 노력을 적극적으로 지지하고 경의를 표한다”며 수상자 선정의 취지를 밝혔다.

한편, 심사위원회는“올해 광주인권상 시상이 스리랑카의 민주주의 발전과 인권신장에 미약하게나마 기여할 수 있기를 기대”하며,“타밀 일람지역에서 보안부대에 의해 자행된 대량 학살 등에 대한 진상이 규명될 수 있도록 국제사회의 관심과 협력, 연대가 함께 하기를 바란다”고 강조했다.

2024 광주인권상 시상식은 오는 5월 18일(토) 오후 6시, 5·18기념문화센터(민주홀)에서 1부 수상자와 함께 하는 토크콘서트와 축하공연, 2부 시상식으로 개최 될 예정이다.

특히 올해 시상식에서는 시민 518명을 초대하여 수상자의 활동에 대한 지지와 응원의 메시지를 전달할 예정이다. 시민참여는 5월 14일까지 광주민주포럼 홈페이지에서 온라인으로 사전등록을 받는다.

Suganthini Mathiyamuthan Thangarasa has been selected as the winner of the 2024 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights

A symbol of the unending struggle of Sri Lankan women for dignity

Award Ceremony: May 18, 2024 (Sat) 6pm, Democracy Hall, May 18 Memorial Culture Center

The 2024 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Jury Committee announced on Thursday, May 2, at 11am at the May Memory Archive of the May 18 Foundation that they have selected Sri Lankan womens rights activist Suganthini Mathiyamuthan Thangarasa, (hereafter referred to as Suganthini) as the 2024 winner of the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights. 

Suganthini, who is the leader of the organization "Amara," which stands for "never-ending struggle for dignity" in Tamil, has been fighting for the human rights and empowerment of war-affected women in Sri Lanka against countless repression and suffering by the Sri Lankan governments military security forces. She stands as a symbol of courage and hope for the numerous women who have lost everything to the military.

The 2024 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Jury Committee chairperson, Song Seon-tae, remarked, "We are confident that Suganthinis activities are closely aligned with the spirit of May 18, and we strongly support and admire her endeavors to improve the human rights situation of Tamil women in Sri Lanka."

The committee added that "we look forward to presenting the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights to Suganthini, to help contribute in some way to the progress of democracy and the advancement of human rights situations in Sri Lanka." They further stressed that "we hope that the international communitys attention, cooperation, and solidarity will enable the truth about the atrocities perpetrated by the security forces in the Tamil Eelam region to be brought to light." 

The 2024 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, at 6pm at the May 18 Memorial Culture Centers Democracy Hall. The ceremony will include a talk, concert, and celebratory performance, followed by the presentation of the award to the winner.

As a special feature of this years award ceremony, 518 citizens will be invited to convey their support for the winners activities. Registration for citizen participation is open until May 14 on the Gwangju Democracy Forum website.
